SHOP TALK: What’s the Difference Between an E-Bike and an E-Motorcycle?

Welcome to SHOP TALK, our video series where founder and builder Rob Pagni shares insights from the shop floor, answers FAQs from riders, and dives into trending topics in the e-bike world.

In this episode, Rob tackles a question we hear all the time: What’s the actual difference between an e-bike and an e-motorcycle? While they might look similar at a glance, there are some key differences in design, classification, and where you're legally allowed to ride. If you're shopping for a new electric ride—or wondering what helmet your kid should be wearing—this one’s for you.

Main Takeaways from the Episode:

  • Pedals are key: E-bikes must have functioning pedals and a motor that assists your pedaling. No pedals = not an e-bike.

  • Legal classification: In California (where we’re based), bikes without pedals—like Sur-Rons and other mini electric motos—are classified as motorcycles and follow different laws.

  • Speed limits matter: E-bikes top out at 28 mph legally, while e-motorcycles can hit 40–60+ mph, depending on mods.

  • Helmet safety is non-negotiable: Bike helmets aren't rated for the speeds e-motorcycles can reach. DOT-approved motorcycle helmets are a must.

  • Trail etiquette counts: Heavier, faster bikes cause more trail wear. Respect trail builders and ride where appropriate.

  • Know before you buy: Ask questions, check classifications, and be aware of where you’re legally allowed to ride.
